__________________________________________________ | In Light of the arrival of Nowrouz, the Iranian | | New Year, on Tuesday March 20, Brief on Iran | | Wishes You A Happy and Successful New Year | ||_________________________________________________| FIVE, INCLUDING A WOMAN, HANGED IN PUBLIC IN TEHRAN, AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE, MARCH 19 TEHRAN - A young woman pleaded in vain for mercy Monday before being hanged at dawn with four men for drug trafficking in a poor quarter of Tehran, watched by hundreds of people. Fariba Tajiani-Emamqoli, 30, blindfolded and with her hands tied, implored pardon from the judges but her appeal was ignored and she was hanged from one of five cranes set up in the eastern Khak-e Sefid district. Executed with her, less than four weeks after their arrest, were Ali Alipour, Ibrahim Qaemshari, Ali-Kazem Aslani and Framan Qaremani-Aazara, all about the same age as their companion. The whole process took 25 minutes, with the bodies being left for 10 minutes before being taken down. Though executions are frequent in Iran and much criticized by human rights groups, the hanging of a woman is extremely rare. [A statement issued by the NCRI said: By carrying out this anti-human crime on the eve of the Iranian New Year, the mullahs are attempting to terrorize and intimidate the public who have expressed their rage and repugnance at the regime during the "feast of fire" celebrations last week. [The execution are carried out while officials have acknowledged that the Intelligence Ministry and other government agencies and leaders have been involved in drug trafficking and that dissidents are executed on the pretext of being drug smugglers, the statement added.] -- Ali Ghaderi International Department Chairman Organization of Iranian People's Fedayee Guerrillas Organizzazione dei Guerriglieri Fedain del Popolo Iraniano C.P 307 Pescara 65100 ITALIA -Tel: 0338-4633949 Fax: 0858025356 e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] web: http://www.fadaian.org
