Subject: "[Ozgurluk.Org]" AFP: Turkish hunger-striker dies

ANKARA, March 21 (AFP) - A Turkish hunger-striker died Wednesday
at the end of a four-month fast in protest against the inauguration
of new jails with tighter security, a leading human rights group
said.
Cengiz Soydas was the first of some 2,000 prison inmates, who
began a mass prison fast late last year, to die.
He died in a prison near Ankara, a spokeswoman for the Human
Rights Association (IHD) told AFP.
Soydas, who began his protest on November 22, had taken only
small amounts of sugar and water and had been hospitalized several
times, resuming his protest each time he returned to prison, she
said.
He was originally jailed for membership of the outlawed
Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).
Fifteen hunger-strikers in a prison in the northwestern city of
Edirne were in a critical condition, the NTV news channel reported.
The mass protest was launched last October by hundreds of
inmates to protest the new jails with cells for up to three inmates,
replacing dormitories for dozens, which were more difficult for
prison authorities to control.
In December, paramilitaries raided 20 jails to break the hunger
strike. The four-day operation resulted in the death of some 30
prisoners, many of whom died of self-immolation, and two soldiers.
