The prisoners have been cahrge with causing the death of a soldier and two fellow inmates during December clashes in a prison during an uprising which affected 20 jails. Soldiers were ordered to storm the prisons to end a two-month hunger strike and transfer leftist prisoners from their dormitory-style wards to small cells. Thirty inmates and two soldiers died in the clashes that lasted four days in prisons throughout the country. Prosecutors charged the inmates of a jail in Istanbul with causing the death of one or more persons during a revolt, organizing a revolt and making explosive devices. The government claims the inmates were armed and has held them responsible for all the deaths in the clashes. Many inmates set themselves on fire, but there are conflicting figures on how many died of burns and how many were shot dead.
