MD News. 18 June 2001. Communist Candidate Wins Race for Mayor's Office
in Balti.


Communist candidate Vasili Panciuc overwhelmingly won the local election
in the city of Balti on Sunday, Dumitru Nidelcu, chairman of the Central
Election Commission (CEC), announced.

Following are the candidates who took part in the scrutiny:

Vasile Panciuc (Communist) - 74.2 percent;

Nicolae Chirilciuc (Party of Progressive Forces) - 17.87 percent;

Valeriu Grumeza (independent) - 3.4 percent;

Iurie Filip (Social Democratic Party) - 1.7 percent;

Leonid Carasiov (Party of Democratic Forces) - 1.38 percent;

Vasile Romanciuc (Democratic Party) - 0.008 percent;

Leonid Grabciuc (independent) - 0.006 percent.

Nidelcu said no incidents were registered during the election, which was
attended by 35.3 percent of the eligible population. The validation of
the election needed at least 33.3 percent of the voters, he said.

Balti is the second largest city in Moldova after Chisinau.

Local elections took place in locations across Moldova last Sunday,
Nicolae Televco, deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission
(CEC), said.

Following are the results of the Sunday local elections:

 Ocnita town: Zalevskaia Galina (Communist), 86.9 percent;

 Sangereii Noi, Balti County: Ceauseac Valentina (Social Democratic
Party [PSDM]), 60.1 percent;

 Maximovca, Chisinau County: second round of elections will be held;

 Chetrosu, Chisinau County: Colozub Andrei (Communist), 74.63 percent;

 Calarasovca, Edinet County: Tolearet Nicolae (independent), 53.7
percent;

 Gradiste, Lapusna County: Nistrean Gheorghe (Agrarian Democratic Party
[PDAM]), 70.3 percent;

Sarata Noua, Lapusna County: second round will be held;

 Braviceni, Orhei County: second round will be held;

 Nicoreni, Soroca County: Gatu Alexandra (independent), 70.3 percent;

 Macaresti, Ungheni County: second round will be held;

 Balti city: Vasili Panciuc (Communist), 74.2 percent.

The second round of elections is scheduled in two weeks.

Televco said that no serious violations were registered in the June 17
local elections and the results would be validated.
