Subject: [downwithcapitalism] Moldova to renew state monopoly

MD News. 21 June 2001. President Voronin Announces Introduction of State
Monopoly on Alcohol in Near Future.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has announced the introduction of
state monopoly on alcohol "in the near future," declining to elaborate
on the issue.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at a meeting between the
president and senior personnel of the Vieru Scientific and Production
Association. The meeting focused on the concept of a state program on
development of the vineyard and wine-making in the period 2001-2020.

Voronin said the program would be funded from revenues obtained from the
sale of alcohol.

According to early estimates of the program, the government expects 210
million dollars in revenues from the grape growing sector during a 20
years' time. The document also sees the a 600,000-ton grape crop in 2020
and approximately 39 million decalitres of raw wines.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry forecasts a 50 percent
reduction of vineyard fields by 2010. If now Moldova has 147,500
hectares of vineyard, in 2010 this area will decline to 71,500 hectares.
It said the cause of the reduction was the massive degradation of
plantations and their aging.

The surface of crop plantations will reduce from 142,500 hectares to
66,500 hectares.

The total grape output will reduce gradually from 584,200 tons to
399,000 tons, including sorts for consumption in fresh condition from
55,000 tons down to 40,000 tons. Last year, Moldova exported almost 16.1
million decalitres of alcohol worth a total of 127.9 million dollars.
