Subject: [downwithcapitalism] PNG: tense Wednesday morning

Radio Australia News. 27 June 2001. PNG police move to contain large
crowd.

Papua New Guinea police are moving to contain a large crowd that has
gathered outside the Defence Force headquarters in Port Moresby.

Richard Dinnen reports police reInforcements and the riot squad are on
standby following yesterday's violent clashes between student protesters
and police.

A large crowd is gathering in the area surrounding Murray Barracks and
while there's been no trouble so far, a large police contingent is
closely monitoring the situation.

Students at the University of Papua New Guinea have declared their
intention to march to parliament later today carrying the bodies of
three students killed in yesterday's clashes. It's not yet clear if
police will allow that march to proceed.
