The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem said
Thursday that there was no room for further
negotiations with Israel because the Jewish state did
 not want peace.

"The intifada of the Palestinian people tells us that
there is no choice left except to resist the Israeli
occupation," the spokesman of the patriarchate,
Archimandrite Theodosios Hanna, told The Daily Star on
the sidelines of a meeting to prepare the first
 anniversary of the intifada.

Hanna said he considered all accords signed between
the Palestinians and Israel as "something of the
past," adding that he was not the only one rejecting
such agreements. "The intifada has proved that all the
Palestinian people are against these accords," he said
at the Commodore Hotel in Beirut.

Hanna said a united Jerusalem should be the capital of
a Palestinian state, and denounced Israel for last
month's occupation of Orient House. He added that this
would not affect the Palestinian determination to make
Jerusalem their capital. "If the Israelis think that
by taking Orient House from us they would obliterate
the Palestinian presence in Jerusalem, then I tell
them that Orient House is only a building," he said.
Jerusalem Mufti Akrama Sabri said that the isolation
of the Palestinians in Jerusalem has tightened since
the occupation of Orient House, for years the symbol
of Palestinian aspirations for sovereignty over the
 disputed city.

The mufti also said initimidation of non-governmental
organiztion has curtailed services to the Arab
 population.

"They closed organizations which provide services for
the Palestinian people, such as the Prisoner House for
the families of detainees in Israeli prisons, the
Chamber of Commerce, and the Department for Geography
and Maps," he told The Daily Star.

Sabri said that although he had not issued a fatwa for
a boycott of American products, he praised similar
edicts issued by other prominent religious leaders.
The mufti also said he could not play the role that
former Mufti Haj Amin Husseini played in 1936 during
the Palestinian revolt against the British Mandate.

"In 1936, there was no Palestinian Authority and no
Palestinian public institutions. This was why the
mufti had a major role in the revolt," he said. "What
I do for the uprising now is to give it support."
Hanna attacked the US for allying with Israel, and
pro-Israel Christian groups, saying that "those who
support Israel and regard themselves as Christians
should know that they are not.

"Christianity advocates justice, while they are
advocating an occupying power which is Israel," he
 said.
Jerusalem's archimandrite also said establishing a
media strategy was necessary to support the uprising.
