National Assembly passes Law on Government's Organisation
The National Assembly on Monday, December 24, approved the whole law on
organisation of the government with 86.3% of votes in favour, following
three days' debates.
At the morning discussion, most lawmakers asked for supplement to Article 23
of the draft law concerning duties and responsibilities of ministers and
heads of ministerial-level agencies and offices in the struggle against
corruption, wasteful spending, red tape and authoritarian behaviour.
When takes effect, the new law will replace the Law on Organisation of the
government enacted on September 30, 1992.
The National Assembly closed its session on December 25. (VNA)

Christmas celebrations held nationwide
The birthday of Jesus Christ was celebrated with great joy on the night of
December 24, across the country.
In Hanoi, a delegation of the Presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front
Central Committee (VFFCC) led by Le Truyen, member of the VFFCC's standing
board, visited the Hanoi Archbishopric to convey greetings from Pham The
Duyet, president of the VFFCC's Presidium, to Vietnamese Catholics.
The delegation also called at the Protestant General Council (in the north)
to extend merry Christmas to Vietnamese Protestants on this joyful occasion.
Earlier, a delegation of the Commission for Mass Mobilisation of the Party
Central Committee also visited the Hanoi Archbishopric and the Protestant
General Council (in the north) to extend greetings to Vietnamese Catholics
and Protestants.
On Christmas eve, more than 30,000 Catholics and Protestants from 62
parishes in the capital city flocked to churches, which were decorated with
coloured lights and flowers, for Christmas celebrations.
Sharing joys with religious believers on this occasion were many
non-religious people.
Phung Huu Phu, member of the Party Central Committee and permanent deputy
secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, and Hoang Van Nghien, member of the
Party Central Committee and mayor of Hanoi, were among well-wishers who
visited various churches to present flowers to Catholics and Protestants.
They also called on Cardinal Pham Dinh Tung, Archbishop of Hanoi, and other
Catholic dignitaries.
This year, Hanoi Catholics and Protestants donated more than VND 103 milion
as relief to flood victims in the Mekong Delta, VND 550 million to funds for
the poor, and VND 170 million to a leprosy home.

In Ho Chi Minh City, more than half a million Catholics and Protestants from
200 Catholic parishes and more than 40 Protestant Councils gathered at
churches to celebrate Christmas.
On this occasion, a delegation of the Ho Chi Minh City's Party, People's and
Fatherland Front Committees led by Le Thanh Hai, member of the Party Central
Committee, deputy secretary of the Party Committee, and mayor of Ho Chi Minh
City, has presented Christmas gifts and extent greetings to Catholic and
Protestant dignitaries in the city.
In Nam Dinh, 400,000 Catholics from 139 parishes welcomed Christmas at Bui
Chu Bishopric, the Cathedral in Nam Dinh city and local churches. In the
meantime, more than 50,000 Catholics from Phat Diem diocese and 28 parishes
gathered at churches for the High Mass.
Christmas celebrations were also held in various provinces and cities
throughout Vietnam, including Hue, Haiphong, Hung Yen, Thanh Hoa, Phu Yen,
Can Tho, Kien Giang, and An Giang. (VNA)

Investigation Security Force¹s Day celebrated
A meeting to mark the 50th Founding Anniversary of Investigation Security
Force was held in Hanoi on December 24 by the Ministry of Public Security.
Colonel Nguyen Van Ry, deputy head of the General Department of Security,
presented a report on the achievements of the investigation security force
in the past 50 years and launched an emulation movement ŒFor National
Security¹ among the whole force of investigation security.
Minister of Public Security Le Minh Huong pinned a Military Exploit Medal,
First Class, the noble award of the Party and State, on the investigation
security¹s flag. The State presented its Feat-of-arms Order, Second Class to
B14 unit of the investigation security force.
Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Huong praised the achievements
recorded by the investigation security force over the past 50 years and
expressed the hope that the whole force would develop into a spearhead force
in the fight against crimes for social security and order, thus contributing
to national socio-economic development.

Vietnam, Laos co-operate on border quarantine
Vietnam and Laos have signed an agreement on border quarantine.
The agreement was signed during the Indochinese Health Ministers' Meeting
held in Hue, capital of Vietnam's central Thua Thien-Hue province, from
December 20-22.
The meeting discussed a long-term co-operation programme for the three
countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
Other documents on co-operation in health care, pharmaceuticals, medical
equipment, and personnel training were also agreed upon by the three
ministers. (VNA)

Vietnamese cosmonaut presented with Russia's
'Peter the Great' prize
Vietnamese cosmonaut Lieutenant General Pham Tuan has been presented with
Russia's 'Peter the Great' prize.
The prize was made in acknowledgement of Pham Tuan contributions to
promoting the relationship between Vietnam and Russia in economics, culture,
and science.
The prize awarding ceremony took place in Moscow on December 22.
General Tuan, who is also head of the Military Industry General Department
of the Vietnam People's Army, and V V Gorbatko of Russia made the first ever
joint Vietnam-Russia space flight on July 20, 1980. (VNA)
