Vietnam, India affirm continued co-operation
in 21st century

Vietnam and India will further tap their available re-sources to take
bilateral co-operation to a new height of development in the new century.

The pledge was made by both Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien of Vietnam and
Indian Ambassador Saurabh Kumar during a meeting in Hanoi on January 7 to
mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between
the two countries (January 7).

Recalling the precious traditional friendship between the two countries,
Foreign Minister Nien and Ambassador Kumar affirmed that the governments and
peoples of Vietnam and India had granted each other assistance and support
in the past struggle for national independence as well as in the present
national construction and development.

Vietnam and India have enjoyed many time-honoured trade and cultural
exchanges as they also share many historical and cultural similarities.

Shortly after Vietnam defeated French colonialism, the two countries
officially established diplomatic ties at the consular level and exchanged
visits by high-level leaders. The Vietnam visit by Indian Prime Minister J
Nehru in October 1954, the India visit by President Ho Chi Minh in February
1958 and the decision to upgrade diplomatic ties to the ambassadorial level
between the two countries 30 years ago laid a firm foundation for bilateral
ties, the two diplomats noted.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam and President of the Vietnam-India
Friendship Association Ho Tien Nghi were prominent among those present at
the meeting. (VNA)
