KATHMANDU -- An activist of the ruling Nepali Congress was shot dead by
Maoist rebels in the far west of the country on Friday evening,
state-run radio said Saturday.

"A senior activist of the ruling Nepali Congress Party, Yagya Gurung,
was shot dead by Maoist rebels Friday evening," the radio said, quoting
local officials.

"Gurung, a party district committee member, was shot dead in district
headquarters," the radio said without giving further details.

Gurung was shot in Surkhet, western Nepal, which is known to be a Maoist
stronghold.
