A Reuters reporter saw heavily armed paramilitary police dismantle barricades mounted by picketing labor leaders in front of a federal government office complex. ``Police are firing teargas and dragging some labor militants into their vehicles,'' a witness said. The strike paralyzed the teeming commercial capital Lagos, where schools, shops and the city's colorful street markets were shut. There was hardly any traffic on the usually chaotic roads and network of flyovers. The government Tuesday declared the indefinite general strike called by the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) illegal and threatened to use force to protect people willing to go to work. The NLC had demanded that the government reverse an 18 percent increase in gasoline prices which came into effect on Jan. 1.
