AFP. 18 January 2002. Impoverished Vietnam to give relief aid to
Afghanistan.

HANOI -- Communist Vietnam, one of the world's largest recipients of
overseas development assistance, is to give 300,000 dollars worth of
essential goods as relief aid to Afghanistan, the foreign ministry said
Saturday.

Vietnam will also send a delegation to an international donors'
conference in Tokyo on Monday which is due to discuss Afghanistan's
reconstruction, said a ministry statement carried by the official media.

The communist authorities here gave unprecedented backing to the US-led
campaign to overthrow Afghanistan's Taliban militia, breaking with years
of principled opposition to Western military operations from Iraq to the
former Yugoslavia.
