Mobs riot in north Belfast
=================

Rioting has erupted on the streets of north Belfast as angry mobs threw
petrol bombs and blast bombs at police.

A car was set on fire and barricades erected as trouble flared in the Shore
Road, Mill Road and Greencastle areas.

Earlier, the home of a Protestant pensioner in the Whitewell area was
extensively damaged when nationalist youths threw a petrol bomb through his
front window.

He had a lucky escape as he had left his pensioner's bungalow to watch
football at his son's home nearby.

North Belfast Democratic Unionist MP Nigel Dodds, who condemned the
violence, said he would be meeting police chiefs tomorrow to demand better
security for the area.

"I have been speaking to people from the White City area and Whitewell area
who are utterly sick, sore and tired seeing their homes and lives being put
in danger by petrol bombers.

"There has to be 24 hour security in the area to protect residents," he
said.

A police spokesman confirmed there were further disturbances in the
neighbouring Shore Road-Mill Road areas, where fire officers were attacked
by a nationalist crowd.

Later, police came under petrol and bomb attack in the same area.

"It is believed that fire service personnel attending reports of a car on
fire in the area of the old B&Q store came under attack from stone throwers
from the Bawnmore area," he said.

The spokesman added that a number of barricades had been erected in the area
and police officers remained at the scene.
