In the capital, Katmandu, schools declared a two-day holiday, despite government assurances that security would be provided. Students also stayed away from government and private colleges. Interior Ministry spokesman Gopendra Pandey said additional security forces had been deployed in Katmandu to avert any attacks. The two-day closure was called by the All Nepal National Free Student Union as a show of support for the rebels, who have been fighting since 1996 to topple the constitutional monarchy and bring communist rule to Nepal. In the past week, the insurgents have attacked two private schools in the capital, exploding small bombs and damaging property. A guard was injured in the latest attack Sunday. The rebels follow the tenets of Chinese communist revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.
