Could you check in your kopete config file
/home/<my home folder>/.kde4/share/config/kopeterc
if you have a defaultPath entry in the [File Transfer] section ?
this default path should be the source of your problem, reset it to
/home/<my home folder>
or simply remove the whole [File Transfer] entry as the path used in kopete is
your home folder if the entry does not exist.
