See discussion on the kopete-devel-mailinglist (Jan/Feb 2010) ;).
I know the issue is quite complex. If you have further questions, feel
free to ask.

We already discussed that. It's about what's optional, what's essential
and how to keep things consistent.
In this case libv4l it's essential, because a (currently) non-optional
feature (capturing from video-devices) not working without it.

Then you're on your own. Good luck !
libv4l-packes are available at least for all major distros for a long
time now (there are packages even for Fedora 8 ;) ).
It's an established library and many distros already install it by
default. I can't see any problems here.

Because many others are using it and it doesn't work for them without
linking to this library.
So why should THEY pay the price ? Because a few people want to save
some kilobytes ?

I agree that it would nake sense to make the whole video-part optional.
I've already put that on my todo-list.
But enabled features must work in ALL cases, not only sometimes !
Otherwise it is called a bug.

_You_ don't care, but there will _always_ be _others_ with _different_
opinions.
Individualism is something good, and we really try to give users as much
options as possible.
But of course this only makes sense up to a certain degree and it's
important to keep things consistent.
