See discussion on the kopete-devel-mailinglist (Jan/Feb 2010) ;). I know the issue is quite complex. In this case libv4l it's essential, because a (currently) non-optional feature (capturing from video-devices) not working without it.

Good luck ! libv4l-packes are available at least for all major distros for a long time now (there are packages even for Fedora 8 ;) ). It's an established library and many distros already install it by default. I can't see any problems here. > Why should I jump through hoops for a feature I will never use? Because many others are using it and it doesn't work for them without linking to this library. So why should THEY pay the price ? Because a few people want to save some kilobytes ? I agree that it would nake sense to make the whole video-part optional. I've already put that on my todo-list. But enabled features must work in ALL cases, not only sometimes ! Otherwise it is called a bug. > > I don't care if you disable the entire webcam subsystem if libv4l2 is > missing (with a big fat warning, of course), I only need to send and > recieve text via jabber. Not even voice, much less video. _You_ don't care, but there will _always_ be _others_ with _different_ opinions. Individualism is something good, and we really try to give users as much options as possible. But of course this only makes sense up to a certain degree and it's important to keep things consistent.
