Shouldn't be a problem as long as you ensure SSL encryption.  Of course, 
opening a
port to the Internet is still something to avoid if it isn't necessary.  Just 
keep
an eye on your logs if you do open it up.

I've been running mine on the Internet for several months without problems to 
this
point.  When I use squirrelmail for webmail access (as I am now), then apache 
uses
SSL, and passes the connection to imapd without SSL.  I only allow unencrypted
connections if they are on the localhost.  IMAP with SSL is for everything else,
like using mutt or thunderbird from home.
