I rebuilt the RPM to see if anything would change and now I've got more stuff installed than I did for an install of Redhat 6.2! There are a huge number of compile options and I have no clue as to which ones were used by the original package creators. My RPM doesn't work either. At least I don't seem to have broken anything.
vlc, when started with (multiple ?) verbose flags, spits out it's configure flags. Though this isn't the be-all, end all of configuration (becoz configure works some stuff out on it's own, and you don't know what that might have been) it's a good starting point
