I bought a new laptop about a year ago (ok, so now it's not new
anymore), but it has one of those "SoundMax" cards. CD Audio works
fine, but playing Mp3s or OGG files sounds like a stretched out tape.
I've tried Suse, RedHat and Slackware. I've tried lots of different
players, installed all sorts of mp3 software thinking the CODECs were
missing or Player wouldn't play Mp3s or OGGs, tried mpg123 mpg321 for
the cli. MPEGs play in mplayer, but for some reason I can't get the
encoded audio only files to play. I realize that RedHat and possibly
Suse don't include mp3 support by default, but Slackware doesn't care,
never has. I've tried ALSA, trying different modules, it detects the
right sound card (or Audio CDs wouldn't play) but any encoded file
sounds like it's stuck or stretched out.

I've always had the best luck with hardware and Slackware but this is
one card that even Slack won't play nice with. Suse's running on it
now...

Thanks!
