Glad you mentioned that....I often mount ISOs as "loop" devices and wondered what the connection was between that and 127.0.0.1. No connection except in name only?
I believe the connection would be that the devices original intent was for testing, and clever people have caused them to evolve. Hardware loopback testers behave similarly to these devices.
