The second misconception is that the thief is only looking for easily accessible and liquid assets: mainly money and jewelry. Wrong again. He'll take anything of perceived value to /him/. And the safer he feels in your home, the longer he'll stay.
There was one master burglar who couldn't figure out how to disable an alarm that he had never seen before. What did he steal from that home? The alarm. He took it home to figure it out. The next time he encountered that alarm model, it was a piece of cake.
