They don't care if they lose money or cause the technology in question to die out. Just as long as no one else gets big.
That's pretty close. Microsoft was created in Bill Gate's image. His underlying motive is not so much greed, but personal insecurity. Face it, he has low self esteem. He doesn't really give a rat's ass about acquiring wealth or fame. He merely wants to prevent anyone else from getting any, even if he has to dig the world's biggest pit and shovel anything and everything into it and then fill in the hole.
The thought of anyone else getting attention bothers him, because in his mind, it exposes his inferiority. And even though he's spent his entire life trying to prove otherwise, he's obviously yet to prove it to himself. Even sadder is that, historically speaking, it will probably look as if he had been living out a self-fulfilling prophesy.
Like a crack addict with the same emotional problems, striving to deprive others of acquiring their own wealth and power are the drugs which Gates uses to distort the image he sees when looks in the mirror.
