I'm sure that you are correct on the origins of Xenix, Neil, but it's my
memory, too, that M$ bought Xenix the company with its product already
having some marker penetration.

The two are in no way mutually exclusive. And in either (or both)
case(s), M$ stayed true to its historical roots of never actually
creating anything.
