Maybe not go, but have a fail-over. If my (digitized) antilock brakes (which I like) go, my brakes still stop the car. I have to press like a lead-footed elephant, but they work.
I'm all for computer-controlled variable assistance for power steering.
I'd happily cheer for fully electronically controlled throttle/accellerator pedals.
I think it's really smart to have computer-controlled regenerative braking systems on hybrids and electrics.
But, damnit, if some nutjob sets off an EMP near while I'm driving, and fries everything more complicated than a toggle switch, there had damn well better be a mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the steering wheels and a real hydraulic circuit between the brake pedal and the brakes.
Remember: If performing an emergency stop from 65mph in a Shelby Cobra requires only 55lbs of pedal force, you should be able to stop any car in a panic with up to 200-250lbs of pedal force. After all, you can hold yourself up on one leg while carrying a child, right? ;)
