The problem could, by luck, be on that one-fifth...

When a BIOS can only handle a certain size of hard drive, what is
actually limiting it?  Can it still access the entire drive,
physically, but only address a limited amount?  Or is it that it will
only physically move the read head to certain orbits?  Or... what? 
The answer may be relevant to this problem.
