lol. You must know him somewhat, because I couldn't make heads or
tails of what the point of his email was. It vaguely appeared as if
it might be a devil's advocate kind of thing, not his true feelings. Either way, that above statement was bold.

Bah, if I couldn't take the heat, I wouldn't make the comments ... ;)

I am glad that Bob has found his path to happiness and fulfillment.

However, to presume to speak for the superiority of a lifestyle is arrogant proselyting in the extreme. My purpose was to demonstrate that the original arguments certainly do not hold for all people, probably not even the majority. As well as to apply the same level of rhetoric in return.

To presume to value the superiority of a lifestyle solely on narrow group happiness without extended reach is beyond arrogance, it is actively *dangerous*. It leads to selfish, group-limited behavior which results in things like Eastern island and internecine warfare.

As for my opinions, I do believe that we, as a society, have become too caught up in money. However, I do not believe we should throw away much of modern society to move back to a simpler time when people paid more attention to familial relations. More attention to familial relations--fine. However, time has dulled what people remember about the "simpler" past. They remember the good things--local food, pleasant people, shorter commutes, etc. They forget about the bad--people dying at their jobs, diseases which crippled, rampant bigotry, etc.

We got where we are today because at each step folks chose to walk this direction. The majority of people seem to agree that this is what they want, or they would chose a different path. Nothing in this country stops an individual from choosing that different path--as Bob so clearly demonstrates.

I should not (and do not) expect to change Bob's opinions. Happiness is measured on a personal level, and he has found his.

However, don't expect that I am going to allow an attempt to proselytize me about how I should be living my life to go unchallenged.
