I installed FC4 on my Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255, with the same basic
sound configuration and the same problem.  You may have already tried
this and it may not even apply to your setup, but running alsamixer and
unmuting the "External Amplifier" all the way on the right fixed the
problem for me.  I don't know why it fixed it, but it did.  I hope that
helps at least a little.
