If there are individual files, one for each mail, then it's some sort of maildir variant. If it's one file for each mailbox, then it's an mbox variant. If you're using Mozilla, then it probably has its own special variations on the format. You could use 'file' on the file. Not sure if that'll tell you anything interesting. It told me something interesting, though: I'm using Evolution (don't try this at home, kids). Evolution stores five different files for each mailbox/folder. It stores Mail, Mail.cmeta, Mail.ev-summary, Mail.ibex.index, and Mail.ibex.index.data. Mail is "ASCII mail text", cmeta, ev-summary and ibex.index.data are "data", and ibex.index is "Macintosh TeachText File (data) : XT.000\001".
