Not always.. if ever anymore. My father was with AT&T for 20+ years and

basically did that to him and many of his friends. The union didn't do

As I recall, your father got offered a rather generous incentive package
to retire (if it was the particular round I'm thinking of). He didn't
just get laid off. Do you really think he would have been offered
anywhere near that without a union? I certainly don't.
True, there are cases of companies doing bad things. IME, and what I saw
happen to my father over the years.. the union rarely ends up helping the
employees that much, usually making some compromise that makes you
wonder if
they were paid off or not.
Both of you also are white collar workers. Lucky you. This doesn't
tend to hold for blue collar. We'll see if this continues to hold for
white collar workers as outsourcing continues.
