Basically you have to go to remove the default association for RPM being
realplayer in edit->preferences->download, select RPM, and edit to save
to disk. Stupidly, IMHO, you can't add new file associations in the same
dialog, but when firefox runs across something new, you can associate it
with an app, and tell it to always use it, upon which the association is
saved in the download box.

I tried all that. Didn't have any affect. I even removed the RPM association altogether. Which is when I discovered there is no way to add a new association. Nevertheless, even with no RPM association whatsoever, Firefox still insists on showing me a Helix player page in which I am invited to play my Redhat Package Manager file.

This is in the infamously buggy Firefox 1.0.4. I don't like upgrading Mozilla-related apps independently of the distribution. Too likely to lose my data, and too much trouble to restore it. So, I just put up with these little idiocies.

Is it just me, and old age, or do I see more and more of the dumbing down of Linux? The new goal of the FOSS community seems to be to make Linux as much like Windows as possible without actually becoming Windows ("We have met the enemy, and he is us." and all that).
