Anyone know if scanners are working in Linux yet? As I recall, USB versions have been generally working well as opposed to parallel port models. (I may want to add a color scanner to my system.) The good all-in-one fax/scanner/printers will email the fax to your
email address so there is no need for special Linux scanner support. I
really like those. I recently used a Brother brand fax/scanner/printer
and it worked well and emailed me the scans.

This is very unclear. Faxes are not inbound-only nor outbound-only. With a regular fax machine, inbound faxes use the printer side, while outbound faxes use the scanner side.

Now, with the machine to which you refer, how can you send a fax of a document in your hand without using the scanner side? How is email going to help with this?
