When you use a credit card in America, the bank is legally liable for unauthorized charges. Just like if you use your credit card at a gas station and they overcharge you. Note that this is different from a debit card- debit cards leave you liable, which si why you shouldn't use them.

Visa offers "Zero Liability" on their debit cards as well as credit cards.
