Evolution uses mbox as a default format for mail. That' s precisely the same format thunderbird uses. Maybe it is not applicable to you, but It should be possible to go to the .evolution/local/mail folder and copy the mail folder containing the mbox files to the subfolder Mail/Local Folders in your profile folder (windows, linux or whatever).
