most service providers worth half a damn use juniper equipment. they're built on a stripped, secured bsd kernel with some special asics and software. very capable and sturdy boxes. sadly, they're x86 :(

Really? So why is Cisco *still* the 800lb Gorilla? Who uses Juniper?

'cause ciscos are cheaper and when someone thinks router, they think cisco. And, when I say Service Provider, I mean the next tier up from Internet Service Provider -- the people who provide internet service to your ISP. People like Level3, TWTC, comcast, SBC Global Networks, and a bunch of other providers use them. On the service provider-level switching front, check out Foundry switches. Those things rule.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like Juniper equipment. I just have only ever seen one ISP use them.

they're great pieces of hardware. Check out olive.cluepon.net if you want to play with JunOS and a garden variety freebsd box with a load of Intel ethernet boards.
