Time to go get some Fedora images. Yes, DeadRat installs the universe, but at least they do it without me beating myself senseless.

You can start with a minimal install and then use yum (command line)/pirut/pup(GUI) to add in packages you need.

When you go to install Fedora you will probably want the proprietary ATI drivers for the video. I use the pre-built RPMs from <http://rpm.livna.org>. They provide a yum repo rpm that can set you up to use the Livna repository. One thing about the ATI driver rpm is that it asks for some "...common...rpm". There is some problem with the "Requires" part of the build so I had to do an install with the --nodeps option. That might be fixed by now but I have pinned my kernel at a slightly older version.

They also provide other nice things like mplayer, xine and xmms with the mp3 plugin. You can also get those at <http://freshrpms.net>
