I thought you wanted to do software compilation.  So you need more
than the generic home-user instllation  You have to ask for it.
Ubuntu or other.

Likewise, for software build station, it really isn't relevant how
fast you can run Tux Racer.

If you don't like the default partitioning, do it yourself.  Ubuntu
puts swap on sda5 because that is the first available in the extended
partition (sda4).

You can start with a minimal install and then use yum (command
line)/pirut/pup(GUI) to add in packages you need.
