A subsidy would be nice. I suspect it is too late to get that before
Wednesday, though. Carl Lowenstein has been looking into the iso stuff.
He told me they have some sort of lame MS Windows-based browser and
other issues.

I downloaded their "offline-package" to my laptop. It seems to mostly
work, albeit the interface is a little clunky. I don't know if we'll
have an internet connection at the exposition...

If you look at http://necc2006.pbwiki.com/Playground%20Booths you'll see
that other folks will be demoing moodle, edbuntu and openoffice.

I hadn't thought of the USB key (good idea!). Knoppix does have the
ability to use one to be persistent via a USB key or a directory on a
hard drive, but OpenOffice is not included on recent versions of the
Knoppix CD (I think it is on the DVD - lacking a DVD burner, I haven't
explored that). I installed Knoppix to a partition on my hd, so maybe
I'll cheat and install OpenOffice there as well.
