Hmm ... my Toshiba laptop freezes to power-down sometimes in Gnome, never
at the command line. I blamed Gnome, but this sounda like it would have
happened under KDE as soom as I hit high CPU load.

However, when it happens to me, I can't even ping the thing, so maybe I
have a different problem.
