Plextor works very well, but is pricy. If you want the best though, it's the way to go.

My personal solution is a NEC 3500A. I've not run into anything it couldn't read or write so far. Disks burn reliably. One small quirk (and it could just be my media) is that it seem to have trouble overwriting a RW DVD. I find it works better to do a quick-erase and then a write, rather than erase/write in one step.
