I'm looking for computer hardware donations for my daughter's middle school.
The kids use them for word processing and the internet. We can use almost anything, but we are especially in need of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. The computers will go into the teachers' classrooms at the rate of one or two per room. I set usually set them up as dual-boot systems with Linux and Windows (the district has a site license for Windows). I leave the default OS as Linux unless I get a complaint. I also ghost the Windows install to a file on the Linux partition so that I can restore Windows when it poops on itself. The kids don't seem to care about the differece between the two operating systems and the various applications. You're probably wondering why the school doesn't have computers. The district provides one computer for each teacher, plus a computer lab. The teachers generally don't let the students use their individual computers because they are afraid of spyware, etc. Anyway, one computer for the teacher and the class isn't really adequate. The computer lab is used for something called MAPS testing. I think it has something to do with "No Child Left Behind". If you talk to the PTA types about the situation they make vague noises about fund rasing to buy new computers. Please let me know if you have some old equipment you want to part with. It will go to a good cause, and I'll make sure you get a receipt for the donation. George -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list
