Let us know how when you get it figured out. ;-) Hmmm, the import tool seems pretty useless. I guess the Edit > Undo.. option no longer works after clearing the trash, eh? Simple experiments with a temporary folder and deleting a message do not provide any inspiration. Google on thunderbird undelete provides some hits that I presume you have seen, none of which looks like a generic fell-swoop method. If you do need to do something with each message, perhaps the formail program (from package procmail) can make it easier to script.
