Still no go with the GBE interface.
it comes up, has an IP, I can ping localhost, ethtool says yup, link at
100MBit but when I ping anything outside I get "unreachable".

Yes. Any ethernet card that has a ndis driver can be used with
ndiswrapper. The tricky part is getting the ndis driver. Not sure how
ndis driver is delivered. Usually it's in some sort of self-extracting
EXE file. I've had success running them with WINE for the Windows
version or DOSEMU for the DOS versions. There are some, however, that
require a full Windows machine to get at them.
