Thanks to those who have answered. Now I have some stuff to try.
Let me clarify my goals to stimulate further suggestions.
We didn't lose the crown jewels here, so suggestions on how to do forensic
disk crawling to recover erased file fragments are probably beyond the
scope of the challenge. As my wife likes to remind me, IIAAOT (It Is After
All Only Television).
Suggestions on how to import the .mpg files so I can watch them are good.
Yes, I'll lose the data in the data base, but I have a show_names
directory.
But here is what I think would be the best way to go ... if only I knew
how (hint hint -- wiki page pointers being solicited).
1. using show_names, pick the worthwhile stuff and transcode it to mpeg2
2. make iso images
3. burn playable CDs/DVDs
4. erase
Does that sound like it can work?
If you haven't already guessed, I'm still a Myth Newb, although Linux and
I are old friends.

If you have enough extra HD space, perhaps you should consider mounting
the ailing drive ro, dd the partition over elsewhere (bit for bit copy),
and do all your experimenting on the copy. It gives you options if
mistakes are made. Then again, IIAAOTV, and I'm less than a Newb when
it comes to Myth. I haven't even cut teeth yet.
