I decided to install the newest Firefox on my Tbinkpad, which is a
Fedora Core 6 system. The most recent version from the yum repository
seems to be 1.5.0.10.

So I went to the Mozilla site, and downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.4.
Installed it as /opt/firefox. Tried to run /opt/firefox/firefox and
found that it wanted libstdc++.so.5. Resident on the FC6 system was
libstdc++.so.6.

Tried the simple expedient of a symbolic link libstdc++.so.6 ->
libstdc++.so.5. No go, apparently some entry points in the .so.5
library have gone away. So -- find an RPM of the proper age, and
install that. Well, rpm won't let me install .so.5 because a more
recent version .so.6 is already installed. After a bit of fumbling,
the proper command came to me:
   $ sudo rpm -ivh --force libstdc++-3.3.2-6-i386.rpm

The magic word is force. Wonder why the latest Firefox requires an
older library.
