Doesn't Linux require one for sending those crappy daily logs to root

I use cfengine to ensure that all of my Linux boxes are configured with
an mta that can send but not receive (not listening on port 25, unless
it is a mail server) so that various things like my lollerskates logfile
analysis program and cfengine and other things can send me reports. But
I am sure to configure my machines to send only stuff that gets read and
are likely to be actionable. I can't stand noise that gets ignored
because false positives make the chance of actually seeing a real
problem nearly zero.
Anyhow, sendmail hanging on boot is most likely a DNS misconfiguration.
Check that your local hosts table has entries for yourself so that it
isn't trying to query a server before one gets set up.
Seconded.
