I believe CDDB and FreeDB use a hash of the time info for the tracks (& maybe other stuff) to look up the CD in the database.

I wrote a program in perl to put tags on music files by extracting stuff from the music filename, doing a cddb lookup over the Internet, showing the user menus regarding title, album, etc., then tagging the file.

I stopped when CDDB started charging. At that point I downloaded the wbole database and was going to put up my own (local) freedb server but got on to other things.

I don't know if this might help you with your project, but you're welcome to any/all of it.
