SEP, for those people who don't remember Douglas Adams, stands for "Somebody Else's Problem" -- aka *I* don't want to have to manage or sysadmin the solution.

I need a group/forum for my Japanese class. These folks are *not* computer literate, so complicated solutions are out.

My first thought was Yahoo Groups. Nice idea, except ...

Yahoo *US* can't handle Japanese email. It *completely* screws up the encodings. Why? I don't know. Even more stupid is the fact that Yahoo Japan handles US encodings *flawlessly*. Unfortunately, I can't expect the class to figure out how to sign up on Yahoo Japan (I do it by reading the source code which labels all the button actions in English).

Okay, so I thought about Facebook/MySpace, but I'm really put off by them both. The amount of "Sign up for X! Give us your password for Y!" is just too high. Effectively, it's like stepping through a minefield of computer insecurity. Sure, I surf with Firefox/NoScript/AdBlock on OS X so am unlikely to have a problem. However, most of these folks are on Windows, and I really would like to *not* subject them to that.

Other suggestions? Does Google have something I could use?

Thanks,
-a
