Sounds like a thermal problem to me. Try running the server, with the drive
in the case but unplugged until it reaches operating temp for a couple of
hours. Plug it all back in and reboot, that might work. I've put drives in
ovens in some cases, sometimes after keeping them in the freezer for a
couple of hours. Just need the thing to run long enough to get the data off
it.

I might have some older drives laying around, I'll check on Fri when I'm in
that office. I'd be happy to see them into a new home instead of sitting on
a shelf.
