I'll check these out. Thanks.

This all sounds good to me except perhaps disabling shift-alt-f1 and the serial
port console.

I'm guessing that you have to have something like a Wyse terminal to plug in
thru
a null modem cable?

And I *like* having shift-alt-f1 (thru f6) available for logging in for root
work.

I realize that the external terminal would help me against a display problem.
But I have no terminal.

I suppose I could use her Vista laptop with a null modem cable (assuming it even
has a serial port), but I have barely touched Vista and would not know how to go
about doing that.

It might be easier to use the router connection between the two machines. The
desktop (with fc7) is hard wired to the router whereas the laptop (Vista) is
wireless to the router.

She doesn't care about storing anything on the machine, so I could go a number
of
ways. I could set up a kiosk mode live CD, or do similar on HDD for faster
bootup. If on HDD, all partitions could be mounted read only, except for any
that *need* to be writable. But in the case of a live CD only version, any
writable partitions would have to be on a RAM drive, which could also be used by
the HDD version.

All she wants is an internet machine that responds quickly, can print, and maybe
scan. She does online banking, email, and online searches for information. She
prints occasionally, and may eventually want to learn how to scan. If she is
interested in doing anything else later, then I will deal with that. But she
loves to keep things simple. She also likes to have things convenient. And she
is one of those who don't realize that some of the convenient things are *very*
complex. But once she realizes that something is complex, her _usual_ reaction
is to wince, and say to forget all that and just keep it simple.

I would not mind setting it up such that I could use her laptop (Vista) to
connect in. If possible, I could even do it via USB. I could even throw
Knoppix
into the laptop to have _real_ tools to work with. But I don't have a terminal.
