I thought Rainbows End was very Neal Stephenson-ish, and I think the
close to modern day setting had a lot to do with that.  Also, both
authors have a fondness for child heroes.  Or maybe that's just
science fiction in general...  Nah, I think it's the authors.  Also
lots of high adventure.
